Media release from the National Chair
CORONAVIRUS – COVID-19
With increasing number of Coronavirus COVID-19 positive infection cases being diagnosed in Australia daily, it is the responsibility of AIBC members to take great care of our employees and third-party stakeholders. We are being advised daily by Government officials through their daily media advisories, not to hold public gatherings in these difficult times which may put vulnerable people at risk.
Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) is the key decision-making committee for health emergencies. It is comprised of all state and territory Chief Health Officers and is chaired by the Australian Chief Medical Officer. A recent media statement release from the AHPPC is provided below:
The Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC), on the advice of the Communicable Disease Network Australia (CDNA), continues to monitor the effectiveness of current travel restrictions and self-quarantine procedures for travellers coming from mainland China, Iran, South Korea and Italy.
COVID-19 continues to spread globally with a growing number of countries experiencing sustained community based transmission and outbreaks. The travel restrictions and self-quarantine measures implemented by the Australian Government have been successful in reducing the number of cases detected in Australia and delaying the onset of community transmission.
The global epidemiology of COVID-19 continues to evolve. While there has been a decreasing number of cases in mainland China and South Korea, the situation and total number of cases remains of concern. There continues to be rapidly increasing number of cases in Iran and Italy.
Consequently, the AHPPC recommend that:
(1) the Government continue to direct primary focus toward domestic containment and preparedness of COVID-19, and
(2) that the Government maintain enhanced border measures and travel restrictions for the aforementioned destinations for a further 7 days, at which time this advice will be reviewed.”

As of yesterday, AIBC NSW Executive Committee has taken a difficult decision to indefinitely postpone an event scheduled to be held today – 12 March 2020 – due to the ongoing coronavirus codenamed COVID-19 by WHO. NSW has the highest incidence of Coronavirus COVID-19 positive tested & infected people in Australia.
The ongoing spread of Coronavirus COVID-19 to over 118 countries has necessitated the Indian Government to take certain drastic measures as of midnight on 11 March 2020 local time in India. The Indian Immigration authorities have issued an immediately effective travel advisory restricting entry of all non-citizens from overseas including OCI holders and valid visa holders until 15 April 2020. This situation is evolving and we recommend our AIBC members to plan ahead and look up the Indian Bureau of Immigration website for daily regular updates – https://boi.gov.in/content/advisory-travel-and-visa-restrictions-related-covid-19-dated-11th-march-2020 – and the updates on Indian Government’s Press Information Bureau website – https://pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1605899 .
The US Government has banned entry of travellers from Europe for the next 30 days. Since this is an evolving situation please look up Australian Government travel advisories for your business plans, if any.
